Nature and purpose

The Cardiff-Stuttgart-Prize is a prize given by the Cardiff-Stuttgart Association. It is meant to encourage the taking up of German to A-level in Cardiff secondary schools and to promote thereby a better understanding between the people of Cardiff and Stuttgart, Wales and Germany.

Prizes

This year’s Cardiff-Stuttgart Prize will have one main prize and two runners-up. The main prize is £100; the prize for the two runners-up is £50.

Judges

The prize judges are:

Johannes Gramich, former president of the Cardiff-Stuttgart Association, published author of fiction, both in German and English

Helga Rother-Simmonds, the Honorary German Consul in Cardiff

Ilse Fisher, former president of the Cardiff-Stuttgart Association and a qualified interpreter

All three judges are native speakers of German.

Procedures

The prize will be presented by Cllr Heather Joyce, the Leader of Cardiff Council on behalf of the Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Cardiff at County Hall on the 16th of April . The ceremony is due to start at 5 p.m. Applicants should be pupils of German at a Cardiff secondary school. A submission will require an essay of 500 words in German with the title ‘Mein Lieblingssport’ (my favourite sport); this must be the pupil’s own work. Applicants should not mark their essay with their names or those of their schools.

Pupils should include with their submissions:

(a) a completed application form, which can be downloaded from here

(b) if the pupil is willing to receive publicity in the media, a completed consent form, which can be downloaded from the website or be taken from this document, signed by the pupil if over 17 or by a parent/guardian if the pupil is under 18;

(c) three copies of the submitted essay (one fair copy and two photocopies are acceptable).

The closing date for submissions is the 1st of March 2013. The three copies of the essay, the completed application and consent forms need to be sent to Erik Williams, Secretary of the Cardiff-Stuttgart Association P.O. Box 567, Cardiff, CF5 2WA.

Guidance

While we appreciate grammatical and linguistic correctness, the main focus of the jury will be on your personal account of your favourite sport. So, please avoid any encyclopaedic data but put forward your own impressions, thoughts and feelings.

Good luck to everyone!
